Traveling to Galveston

Galveston Airports

While Scholes International Airport is located in Galveston, no major carriers have passenger flights there. Two major airports in nearby Houston provide the best options: George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) and William P. Hobby Airport (HOU). Either airport is an excellent choice, but passengers tend to have their personal preferences between the two.

What airport do you fly into for Galveston?

IAH and HOU both offer a variety of carriers, flight times and costs. However, most Galveston visitors who fly into the area prefer Hobby Airport due to its close proximity to Galveston. Hobby is 42 miles and only a 30-minute drive away.

If you are a cruiser looking for ways to get to the Galveston cruise port, Hobby (HOU) makes travel convenient for you. Several transportation companies offer round-trip shuttle service to the cruise port for passengers who fly into Hobby. That will save you the cost of a rental car and associated parking fees at the cruise terminal.

How far is Galveston from the Houston airport?

Hobby is 42 miles from Galveston. IAH is about 80 miles from Galveston, but it’s located on the far north side of Houston. This means you’ll be dealing with heavy Houston traffic in order to get south past the city. We advise guests to plan on a 2-3 hour travel time from IAH to Galveston during the summer months, when local Houstonians are also making their way to Galveston’s beaches.

Because it has the most flight service, IAH is an appealing choice for some passengers. Those who enjoy more flexibility with flight times and ticket prices like the diverse selection at George Bush Intercontinental Airport.

How much is an Uber ride from Houston to Galveston?

Uber and other rideshare companies do not have fixed rates. Their rates depend upon the time of day, trip distance and volume of customers requesting service. Uber rides from Hobby Airport to Galveston cost anywhere between $55- $100+. Rides from IAH average between $55- $150+.
