There aren't many amusement parks where “over the ocean” is a recurring feature of the rides. At Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier, roller coasters dive toward the Gulf, swings rotate 230 feet above sea level and a pirate ship sends riders sailing out over the water. How cool is that?
The current pier opened in 2012, but Galveston has been in the amusement business for well over a century. The city had its own “Coney Island of the South” in 1906, followed by an over-water military recreation pier in the 1940s and the famous Flagship Hotel, which stood here until Hurricane Ike badly damaged it in 2008. Today, the fun is back over the water, with 16 rides, midway games, restaurants, shops and entertainment stretching 1,130 feet into the Gulf.

The Best Rides at Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier
Iron Shark
The Iron Shark Roller Coaster is the pier’s signature thrill ride and the largest steel coaster in the Houston area. The coaster climbs a 100-foot vertical lift, hits 52 mph and runs through four inversions along 1,246 feet of track. Its compact layout includes a diving loop and a beyond-vertical drop, all built directly over the Gulf. The climb is half the fun, or terror, as the ocean suddenly opens up beneath you.
Texas Star Flyer
Got a head for heights? Texas Star Flyer takes the classic swing ride and sends it 23 stories into the Texas sky. At 230 feet above sea level, riders spin through a full 360-degree panorama of the beach, pier and Gulf Coast. The swings rotate over open water, which certainly changes the perspective when you look down.
Pirate's Plunge
On a hot Galveston afternoon, Pirate's Plunge has a pretty convincing cooling system. The log flume enters through a giant pirate ship and includes 22-foot and 40-foot drops. Dry clothes are optimistic here. A wall beside the first drop sends the splash bouncing straight back at you.
Galaxy Wheel
For Gulf views with fewer screams involved, head to the far end of the pier and climb aboard the 100-foot Galaxy Wheel. Its 20 open-air cabins hold up to six people each, and cameras are allowed onboard, so this is a good spot for family photographs and Gulf panoramas. Time your ride around sunset and you can watch the coast change color from nine stories up; after dark, computerized LEDs light the wheel itself.
Solo visitors should find a companion, though. The Galaxy Wheel requires at least two riders per cabin.
Sea Dragon
The Sea Dragon takes the classic swinging pirate ship and gives it a Galveston twist: part of the ride happens over open water. For maximum effect, grab a seat at the far end of the boat on the water-facing side. As the ship swings upward, you'll find yourself looking directly down toward the waves.
Cyclone
The Cyclone spins through a full circle and isn't in any hurry to get you upright again. Its slower rotations create extended hangtime at the top, so you'll have a few moments to contemplate the Gulf from an angle humans weren't really built for.
Don't Forget the Rainforest River Adventure
Here’s a fun little bonus that takes you off the pier and straight into the jungle. Just down the street, Rainforest Cafe is home to the Rainforest River Adventure, the only Rainforest Cafe in the world with its own indoor dark ride. Climb into a circular boat and float past animatronic elephants, tigers, gorillas and snakes on your way to a temple-themed finale.
And here’s the best part: your Pleasure Pier All-Day Ride Pass gets you unlimited rides on the Rainforest River Adventure. Traveling with younger kids? Definitely save some energy for this one.
Midway Games & Family Attractions
Rides aren't the whole story. The pier also has classic midway games, so save a little competitive energy between roller-coaster rounds and see who has the best carnival-game skills.
Little thrill-seekers get their share of the action, too, with the double-decker carousel, spinning teacups and Frog Hopper. In other words, nobody has to spend the day watching the taller members of the family disappear into ride queues.
One to cross off the ride plan for now is Revolution. The spinning pendulum attraction is temporarily closed for maintenance until further notice.
Special Programs & Events at Pleasure Pier
Turn Reading Into Free Rides
Pleasure Pier has found a pretty convincing way to get kids reading: finish your books, earn a day of rides. Its Book Adventures Reading Program is open to students from kindergarten through sixth grade, who read for 20 minutes a day and track their progress on a calendar signed by a parent or guardian and certified teacher.
Complete a month between October and March and the payoff is a certificate for one free All-Day Ride Pass. Teacher and classroom registration starts around July or August.
Catch Live Entertainment at Stage 25
Stage 25 is where Pleasure Pier turns up the volume, with live music and concerts right on the waterfront. The schedule changes, so check what’s on during your visit. Planning something bigger? Groups of 25 or more can also book special packages for birthdays, corporate gatherings and family outings.
Where to Eat
Sit Down at Bubba Gump Shrimp Co.
At the pier entrance, Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. & Market was the first Texas location of the Forrest Gump-inspired restaurant. Grab a table in the large dining room or head to the Gulf-facing patio, then get serious about seafood. Shrimp Shack Mac & Cheese, shrimp cocktail and seafood entrées are among the favorites, with key lime pie and the Alabama Brownie waiting at the finish line.
Grab Something Between Rides
You don’t need to commit to a full sit-down meal every time hunger strikes. Big Top Bites serves amusement-park classics such as burgers, fries, hot dogs and chicken tenders, and Slices & More! is your stop for pizza, nachos and other grab-and-go favorites.
Need something a little stronger after the Iron Shark? The Brew Station pours draft beer, wine and margaritas alongside turkey legs, sausage on a stick and hot dogs.
Got a sweet tooth? Carousel Court Sweets has funnel cakes, cotton candy, popcorn and ice cream, Sweet Scoops Ice Cream scoops up Blue Bell with waffle cones, shakes, malts and sundaes, and Lolli & Pop’s Candy Shoppe goes all in on gummies, lollipops and nostalgic candy.
Shopping & Souvenirs
Pelican’s Bag is the pier’s main souvenir stop, with Pleasure Pier merchandise, Iron Shark shirts, Pirate’s Plunge hats and other ride-themed gear. Forgot sunscreen or a towel? You’re covered there, too.
At Lolli & Pop’s Candy Shoppe, look out for the reusable souvenir cup. It scores you discounted drink refills throughout the day and can also qualify for discounted refills at other Landry’s attractions, including Kemah Boardwalk and Downtown Aquarium.
Still shopping? Bubba Gump Retail near the entrance has Galveston-specific glassware, clothing and souvenirs, while smaller carts and kiosks around the pier are good for a last-minute memento on your way to the next ride.
Practical Tips for Visiting Pleasure Pier
Choose Your Ticket Option
There are several admission types, and you need admission even if you don't plan to ride.
All-Day Ride Pass: Starts at $30.99 for guests 48 inches and taller and $24.99 for those under 48 inches, plus tax. This pass allows you to ride everything you can.
Walk-On Pass: Just coming along for the views, food and family fun? This pass starts at $12.50 for guests 48 inches and taller, with lower rates for shorter guests and seniors 65+. Children under two enter free.
Single-ride tickets: Only have eyes for one ride? Single-ride tickets start at $6, but you’ll need a Walk-On Pass as well. And if Iron Shark starts looking irresistible once you’re inside, no problem, you can upgrade your Walk-On Pass to an All-Day Ride Pass by paying the difference.
One important tip: Don’t take off or damage your wristband. It’s your ticket to same-day re-entry and won’t be replaced if it breaks or comes off.
Have a Parking Plan
The premium paid lot at 2502 Seawall Boulevard is directly opposite the pier, with peak-season parking at $15 and both cash and cards accepted. It’s open from 8 a.m. to 2 a.m., and towing starts at 3 a.m., so don’t push your luck with an overnight stay.
Want to save the parking fee? Free parking is available a short distance away, but you’ll trade the $15 for roughly a 15-minute walk to the entrance.
Secure Your Glasses and Loose Belongings
Heading for the rides? Travel light. Purses, backpacks and drinks aren’t allowed in ride queues or loading areas, with paid lockers available behind the main ticket entrance. Glasses need a secure strap on most rides, unless you’re happy to leave them behind.
Check the Weather and Ride Status
There’s one thing you can’t plan around at an amusement park stretching over the Gulf: the weather gets a vote. High winds and lightning can temporarily shut rides down, and the pier has a no-refund and no-rain-check policy for weather, maintenance and ride closures.
So if the forecast looks questionable, factor that into your plans. It’s also worth checking which rides are operating on the morning of your visit, as individual attractions can be down for maintenance.
