Annual Events in Galveston

No time to browse the calendar? Take a quick look at some of our favorite annual events in Galveston.

On Saturday nights throughout the year, the Galveston Art Center presents ArtWalk. Galleries, restaurants, and retail spaces extend their hours and often offer hors d'oeuvres or special exhibit, all in support of our vibrant local art scene. This is a longtime local favorite.

The Pleasure Pier, a year-round attraction, offers a variety of special Galveston event days. Extending from the seawall out over the Gulf, it is home to rides, restaurants, carnival-style concessions, and souvenir shopping. In January and February, the Historic Pleasure Pier welcomes adults to be a “Kid for a Day.” Everyone pays children’s admission prices for all-day passes. Visit their website for a full schedule of events.

Each November, Galveston hosts one of the largest motorcycle rallies in the U.S. Thousands of bikers from across the country roar onto the Island for a four-day celebration. The event features concerts, an Old Time Motorcycle Rodeo, car & truck shows, and more!

Galveston Restaurant Week

For two weeks each January, Sysco Houston presents Galveston Restaurant Week. Galveston Island is home to some of the freshest seafood in Texas and, thanks to Restaurant Week, visitors can sample local menu options for a fraction of the price. No tickets are required — foodies can simply visit participating restaurants and take advantage of featured prix-fixe menus.

Mardi Gras! Galveston

Let the good times roll! This two-week festival is the largest Mardi Gras celebration in Texas. Enjoy elaborate parades, balcony parties, and live entertainment. You can bring the kids along for some fun family time, too — the schedule includes many family-friendly activities such as children’s parades and coloring contests for the little ones. If you prefer to let your hair down and have some grown-up fun, you're in luck; you can purchase tickets for the New Orleans-style balcony parties on Strand Street. Get yours early!

Grand Kids Festival

The Grand 1894 Opera House puts on the Grand Kids Festival each April. This one-day exhibit of musical performances and art for kids of all ages takes place on Post Office Street, in Galveston’s Cultural Arts District in Historic Downtown. Admission, rides, and fun are free to the public. Your kids will love this fun-filled day created just for them.

Independence Day Parade & Fireworks

Nobody in Texas celebrates the 4th of July like Galveston! The city has hosted a vibrant Independence Day celebration for nearly 200 years. The festivities begin with a parade of performers, exciting floats, and military vehicles. Fun for all, this event is one you don’t want to miss.

AIA Sandcastle Competition

Galvestonians and Island visitors look forward to August every year when the AIA Houston hosts its annual sandcastle building competition. Teams of architects create enormous works of art from sand. This Galveston event is exciting for the entire family. Pack a picnic, bring your umbrellas and chairs (or rent them), and get ready for a day filled with fun and imagination.

ARToberFEST

The Grand 1894 Opera House presents another great annual event. ARToberFEST, held every October, is a weekend-long fine arts festival. Typically, more than 100 artists feature and sell their artwork. This local favorite includes live music performances, food, drinks, a local farmers market, and an interactive play zone for kids. It’s a good time for all ages.

Holiday in the Gardens

Moody Gardens’ holiday celebration is one of the most anticipated events of the year. This popular destination brings magic to life for eight weeks each winter season. It runs from November to January. Read below for information on some of the top attractions.

Festival of Lights

Running along a mile-long trail through Moody Gardens, visitors enjoy animated displays created with over one million lights. There is also live entertainment, the only outdoor skating rink in the area, and yummy hot cocoa.

Iceland

If you’re up for a chilly yet awe-inspiring experience, head into this nine-degree exhibit. Master carvers use two million pounds of ice to hand-carve everything in Iceland. This polar playhouse showcases a different theme each year. Kids love the Giant Ice Slide and adults love the courtesy jackets that keep you warm. Restaurants and outdoor concessions offer full meals and tasty treats for sale.
