Your World Cup 2026 Guide (Galveston Edition)

As one of 16 host cities, Houston will be a central hub for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. With a deep-rooted soccer culture reflected in its passionate fan base, global food scene, and vibrant neighborhoods, Houston is a great destination for the festivities. With only one problem - it’s missing a certain something, like a beachfront sunrise to start the day and a non-congested historic center to leisurely wander after dinner at night.

The good news? A beachfront home base in Galveston is only about 1 hour away! With one of soccer's most-anticipated world sporting events just around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about where to stay.

This is your guide to what to expect at this year’s World Cup and how Galveston can help bring balance to the hustle and bustle!

About the 2026 World Cup

While Houston will play a major role in this every 4-year tournament (the largest World Cup ever held), it is one of 16 US cities, including Miami, Seattle, Boston, and Atlanta, that will host. It will feature 48 teams dueling it out on the world stage over 104 thrilling matches across three countries in total.

This particular World Cup is special because it marks nearly a century of competition, starting in 1930 in Uruguay.

There are many reasons the committee chose Houston as a destination. One of the biggest? NRG Stadium, located just 4 miles from downtown Houston, offers a retractable roof, which is climate-controlled when closed. This makes for an ideal venue for an international tournament, especially during Texas summer weather.

What is the Match Schedule at NRG Stadium?

NRG Stadium will host a variety of FIFA World Cup action, from early group stage showdowns to high-stakes knockout rounds (congratulations if you have tickets locked in for the latter!). Teams scheduled to play in Houston include Germany, Portugal, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, Ukraine, Albania, and Congo.

Below is the full lineup of matches scheduled to take place in Houston:

  • Match 10 – Group | Sunday, June 14
  • Match 23 – Group | Wednesday, June 17
  • Match 35 – Group | Saturday, June 20
  • Match 47 – Group  | Tuesday, June 23
  • Match 65 – Group | Friday, June 26
  • Match 76 – Round of 32 | Monday, June 29
  • Match 90 – Round of 16 | Saturday, July 4

What to Do in Galveston Between Matches

Hit the Beach

Galveston’s coastline is the main draw to booking your stay outside of Houston proper. Popular stretches like East Beach and Stewart Beach offer plenty of space, while quieter West End beaches are great for a more relaxed vibe.

Jamaica Beach on the West End is quieter and known for wide, uncrowded beaches, easy public access, and a relaxed, family-friendly coastal vibe.

Explore the Historic Strand District

The Strand Historic District is packed with 19th-century architecture, charming local shops (the Hendley Market is a favorite for handmade crafts and unique goodies themed around the island’s history), galleries, and casual bars. It’s a great place to grab seafood, browse souvenirs, or enjoy a drink while soaking up Galveston’s historic character.

Visit Moody Gardens

For something totally different, Moody Gardens combines education and entertainment with its iconic glass pyramids. You’ll find a rainforest, aquarium, seasonal exhibits, and even an ice rink. It’s an easy call to spend half a day here between matches.

Walk the Seawall

The Galveston Seawall stretches for miles and is perfect for biking, walking, or grabbing casual food with ocean views. It’s especially lively in the evenings and a great spot for a sunset reset before the next game.

Ride the Pleasure Pier

If you want something fun and fast, Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier offers rides, games, and classic boardwalk energy right over the water—easy entertainment without a long time commitment.

Eat Your Way Through the Island

Galveston punches above its weight for eating, especially seafood. From Gulf shrimp and oysters to Tex-Mex and casual beach bars, it’s easy to turn a free afternoon into a relaxed food crawl without ever feeling rushed.

Some of our favorites:

  • Gaido’s Seafood Restaurant: A Galveston institution with classic Gulf seafood, a fancier vibe, and a long history on the island.
  • Shrimp N Stuff: Casual, local, and a perfect choice for no-frills coastal comfort food. Think fried shrimp baskets and po’boys.
  • The Spot: A laid back Seawall staple offering American fare classics like burgers, seafood, cocktails, and ocean views.
  • Katie’s Seafood House: Dockside dining with ultra fresh catch of the day waiting.
