Galveston summers are hot and sunny — perfect for days on the sand in Jamaica Beach. Daytime highs average in the mid-80s, but it’s not uncommon to hit the 90s in July and August.

Cooling sea breezes from the Gulf Coast are a welcome treat in summer, making the Texas heat much more bearable than on the mainland. Nevertheless, it’s a good idea to have some indoor activities planned for a break from the sun or occasional summer showers.

With the summer vacation ending, fall in Jamaica Beach is an ideal time to visit for warm weather with fewer crowds. The water is still warm enough for swimming, and daytime highs start to dip from the 80s to the upper 70s, moving toward October and November. Visiting Galveston in the winter is a special experience, as the beaches are a lot emptier and the days cool but still often sunny and ideal for spending time outdoors. The high temps are typically in the low 60s during winter in Jamaica Beach, while lows stay around 50 on average.

One of the top perks of staying in Jamaica Beach is easy access to Galveston Island State Park. The park stretches from coast to coast across a narrow strip of the island, providing access to quiet beaches, peaceful bayside ponds, and marshes full of wildlife.

Hiking, cycling, and paddling are popular activities here. Trails for each activity are available, and local vendors rent bikes, kayaks, and canoes. Over 300 species of winged birds have also been identified here, so birders will love tracking and watching the feathered creatures.

• The several miles of hiking paths include the easy half mile Eskimo Curlew Trail and the more moderate one mile Clapper Rail Trail along a bayou.

Since the Jamaica Beach community consists of private homes and vacation rentals, the beaches here are relatively quiet and free from crowds. The public beach is walkable from many accommodations here, or you can drive directly onto the sand.

You can easily spend a whole day here building sand castles, splashing in the water, boogie boarding on small waves, and picnicking with a beautiful view.

3. Go paddling

Paddling is a fun activity to do from Jamaica Beach, even if you don’t have a lot of experience. Some vacation homes on the bay side have direct water access to the canals, making it super easy to launch a kayak or canoe and head toward gentle coves and bayous. There are also a few different launch points in neighboring Galveston Island State Park.
